About
Short biography
Augusto Sarti received his BS/MS and Ph.D. in electrical and electronics engineering from the University of Padua, Italy, in 1988 and 1993, with research on nonlinear communication systems. His graduate studies included a joint program with the University of California, Berkeley, focusing on nonlinear system theory. He has been with the Politecnico di Milano since 1993, where he is now Full Professor at the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering (DEIB), and held an adjunct professorship at the University of California, Davis, from 2013 to 2017.
His research concerns digital signal processing, with a focus on wave digital filters and nonlinear system theory, spatial and space-time audio processing, sound analysis, synthesis and processing, and structured learning architectures. Over the years his contributions have spanned sound synthesis through nonlinear wave digital filters; plenacoustic and geometry-based acoustic scene analysis, soundfield rendering; the modeling and inversion of nonlinear circuits; and, more recently, physics-informed and structured learning methods for audio.
He teaches Sound Analysis, Synthesis and Processing, and Computer Music Representation and Modelling, serves as Chief Editor at Frontiers in Signal Processing, and is a member of the MUSART doctoral college, the joint AFAM doctorate between the Conservatories of Milan and Florence. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE and has held numerous editorial and technical-committee roles across the IEEE, EURASIP, and the European Acoustics Association.

Wave digital filters & nonlinear systems
Structured methods for simulating and inverting nonlinear circuits — biparametric and vector wave digital filters, virtual analog modeling, and the virtualization of audio transducers.
Spatial & space-time audio
Ray-space and geometry-based methods for capturing, analyzing, and rendering soundfields, including source localization and acoustic scene reconstruction with distributed arrays.
Structured learning for audio
Physics-informed neural networks and structured architectures for near-field acoustic holography, soundfield reconstruction, and source separation.
Musical acoustics
Data-driven and model-based study of stringed instruments — violins, guitars, and their materials — bridging acoustics, measurement, and instrument design.
